Since my Eighth Grade graduation, I served in leadership roles in a variety of school clubs, was elected to lead a 1200 student youth-in-government conference, and swam 4 years on the varsity swim team. I graduated from Franklin County as Valedictorian with 44 college credit hours under my belt and a $160,000 scholarship to a liberal arts college, where I have

The opportunities for breadth and depth of learning I’ve taken advantage of at Harvard began at Capital Day School. There, as here, learning is valued not as a tool to get ahead but as something worthy for its own sake. Being challenged, experiencing setbacks, learning from my mistakes and, importantly, from my peers—all of these things I’ve experienced in college yet first at Capital Day. While my high school experience was generally positive, I cannot say that I was challenged there as uniformly or constructively as I was during elementary and middle school. It was Capital Day that taught me how to think.

Hallie has worked as an intern at WinStar Farm, Brand Ambassador at America’s Best Racing and as a groom at Three Chimneys Farm. She completed the Irish National Stud Breeding course in 2014.  Hallie was one of two candidates from the United States to be chosen to participate in the renowned Darley Program.  Darley Flying Start is an education charity that provides twelve scholarships annually to those seeking to study and experience the global thoroughbred industry at its highest level.  Those that graduate from the program receive a Graduate Certificate in Management (Thoroughbred Industry) from the University College of Dublin Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School in Dublin, Ireland. 

The program is endorsed by thoroughbred industry leaders throughout the world.  Hardy completed the Irish National Stud program in County Kildaire, Ireland in July of 2014 before starting the Darley program in August.

I always say that Capital Day is where I learned everything to get me this far, especially my study habits and time management. The teachers always pushed me to the best of my ability and always supported me. I definitely give credit to Capital Day for getting me this far in my educational career. Almost every aspect of my professional career can be traced back to what I learned as a student at Capital Day.  I began my career as a trumpet player in the 4th grade when one of my CDS classmates pointed to a list on the wall and said “You’re going to be in the band. Go sign up.”
 

My career as a public affairs and communications director got its start from winning or placing in annual CDS spelling bees, as well as the in-depth training I got from Mrs. Turner on how to be a stickler for spelling and grammar. I’m lucky to still be friends with classmates and teachers from CDS, and thanks to Mrs. Birdwhistell I can still recite Pi to the 13th decimal place.

CDS gave me a great education and it prepared me well for boarding school, college, graduate school, and how to complete complex job assignments all throughout my career. I remember many things that the good teachers such as Mrs. Mixson, Mrs. Brawner, Mrs. Woodall, and Mrs. Nooe taught me. While I never became a stellar student or enjoyed a highly successful career, I credit Capital Day School for giving me the tools to be patient, tireless, and creative to complete tasks on time and appreciate quality types of work. Mrs. Woodall should be given great praise for her steadfast commitment to helping me with my writing and grammar, which in turn helped me learn to think critically and analytically. I am so pleased that CDS has developed about the best elementary education program around for those attending today. It is a wonderful school and as in my experience, it evidently challenges one to strive to solve problems and develop ways to foster improvements in all aspects of life.

It is now my senior year of college. This is a point in my life that I always deemed forever distant; now it is a surreal reality. As I am scheduling my final classes of my academic career, I look back to how all of this started. I calculate the ways I have gotten to where I am today.

Capital Day has continually provided my life with useful benefits long after graduation. The values CDS instilled in my daily life at such a young age are still apparent in my current life. The emphasis our teachers placed on activities and interests such as community service, academic integrity and rigor, and personal attention, I believe, pushed me ahead of my peers. To be specific, school has never come easily to me, and that is why private school was a perfect fit. The habits I adopted at CDS have been instrumental to my studies during my academic career. Although I have always acknowledged that I will not be the most naturally “smart” person in the room, I do know how hard I have worked for my knowledge. That mindset, and many others, started at CDS,

CDS is an environment that not everyone has the chance to experience. I am one of the ones who experienced it from Preschool until 8th grade. Some of my dearest and closest friends went through the exact same process as me. So many of my memories take place inside of that petite building, ones that I will remember and reflect on for the rest of my life. Go Cavs!

I was a member of the first graduating class at Capital Day School in 1964. After college my husband and I moved back to Frankfort. Mary Logan Brawner was one of my first teachers at CDS. I was employed by CDS after several years in the
Franklin Co. school system in 1978. I gradually took over Mrs. Brawner’s teaching duties when she retired. The small classes, individual attention, values, and attention to details have been a huge influence in my life. My 2 boys are also graduates of CDS and always compliment the English grammar and writing skills they acquired while at CDS. When it was time for them to choose a college they both wanted a smaller liberal art college where professors knew their name and they were accountable for their actions and accomplishments. Both graduated from Hampden Sydney College in Farmville, Virginia.

My family and I relocated to the United States when I was 8 years old, Capital Day School was the school that my parents had us attend. I can’t say we participated until at least a year later as we adjusted to the English language (coming from Germany). Capital Day provided the framework of our education and I’m thankful I had the opportunity to be educated and raised there.
i eventually skipped 8th grade (no Key Largo trip for me) to rejoin my age group as a Freshman at FHS. There are many educators that are still there that had a great impact on the continuity of ones education and you knew what you’d be facing. With turnover comes uncertainty and a new start which isn’t always bad but the key people involved with the school have been there for a long time, surely not because of the paycheck but the desire to educate students.

I’m grateful to be an alumni and try to pass by when I get a chance to get back to Frankfort.

Capital Day influenced my life in many positive ways that have impacted my life post-graduation. It instilled in me the value and importance of hard work and self-discipline at a young age that has followed me throughout high school and my undergraduate studies. The small class size taught me the value of respecting those around me and learning how to get along and work well in small groups. The faculty at CDS was extremely attentive and had a way of connecting on a personal level with students and teaching the material in a fun and interesting way. I learned many study and note-taking skills that I would not have gained elsewhere that have followed me since graduating. In addition, CDS taught me how to get along and socialize with people from many different backgrounds and interests despite the grade level. It creates a warm family environment and encourages students to step outside the box and encouraged student involvement. The sports program also helped me learn the value of good sportsmanship, as we were a small team and had to work together extremely well to compete with larger schools. All in all, CDS has provided me with an unforgettable experience and a phenomenal academic foundation that has allowed me to succeed academically and socially and travel the world.

Capital Day’s challenging curriculum proved a better preparation for college than the majority of my high school classes. The strong foundation in English grammar and reading I was afforded in both lower and upper school encouraged a lifelong (to date!) love of literature and language. Complimenting the rigorous coursework was a constant sense of community and support from my teachers and peers. Capital Day’s culture consistently embraced and encouraged my creativity.
Among so many pleasant memories, I remember most fondly (in no particular order):
– Dressing up for Character Day (I was a very convincing Susan B. Anthony, if I do say so myself)
– Creating a (not so) terrifying Haunted House with my eighth grade class
– Medieval Week
– Trips to Key Largo and Chicago (of course!), but also Pine Mountain Settlement School (I later returned to complete a rewarding environmental education internship at PMSS)
– The Peter and the Wolf puppet show
– Ms. Turner’s creative writing prompts, the tiny paper cranes that flocked her classroom’s ceiling, looking forward to English class every day
– Ms. Coblin’s cozy library, and the fact that she read out loud to us, sitting cross-legged on the floor, for far longer than was “necessary”
– Art class, art class, art class
I could go on.
I am thankful that these formative years of my life were spent in such a place.

I take on a lead in the Kentucky Court of Justice; Administrative office of The Courts where I am a payroll guide for accessing and contributing to the Pay of all Judges in Kentucky along with Pre-Trial Officers and other Kentucky Court Personnel Administration. Throughout my career I have taken on roles as creating new systems at Department of Community Based Services at Records Management Department for creating a new database of entering records for Data of CAN Checks and Background Checks.

Capital Day gave me a positive attitude and skills of learning to always never give up and overcome all obstacles that have been thrown at you. I believe that Capital Day gave me the confidence that I needed to go to high-school and graduate with scholarships to go to college and graduate with a degree. I will never forget my teachers, Mrs. Turner, Mrs. Adkins, Mrs. Birdwhistle, Mr. Matthews, Mr. Hancock, Ms. Preston (rest peacefully), Ms. Coblin, Mrs. Arrnett, Mrs. Carr, Mr. Taylor, Mr. Sparks, and many more, yes I remember them all, and could keep going!

These skills have helped me cultivate discipline in my academic life and also freed me up to read and research beyond the classroom to delve deeper into my specific interests. Capital Day School (CDS) helped prepare me with a well balanced education, cross-culture exposure and appreciation, and a self-motivated desire to achieve ambitions and goals. During my nine years of attendance from 1962 to 1971, I was fortunate to be taught in a small classroom setting with well dedicated teachers who took great interests in their student’s achievements and successes. In addition to having a distinguished faculty, CDS also had marvelous students who took pride in their school. The community of Frankfort is blessed to have CDS as an alternative educational institution.

While not a positive attribute in the mind of a middle schooler, the main thing

that I recall from my time at CDS is how all the teachers held such high

expectations of the students. In retrospect, this is exceptional and beneficial

in so many ways, yet at the time I struggled with it as I wasn’t the most

motivated of students. I remember being consistently supported at an individual level to perform well and push myself whether it was art, math, French or English. That kind of attention and investment from the teachers was certainly lacking at other schools I attended later. Now, I realize that this was by design and is accomplished through the passion of the folks who teach at CDS. Hopefully, those high expectations are still in place for the current students even though they probably won’t appreciate it until much later.
