Capital Day School’s Preschool Program is a licensed Type I Child Care Center offering

preschool classes and extended day services for three- and four-year-old children.

CDS offers a traditional pre-school program and a Montessori program. All preschool

classes meet five days a week from 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. and are designed to

provide a comfortable and creative atmosphere for learning.

The goal of the Preschool Program is to offer children a successful start to their school

career in a safe and nurturing environment.  Preschool students are unique individuals and possess a wide range of developmental abilities.  By building relationships with students and their families, preschool teachers gain insight of the strengths and challenges for the individual student and customize learning opportunities. The developmentally appropriate curriculums in both our traditional and Montessori classrooms focus on social and emotional skills, large and fine motor skills, and academic skills.  Science, math, language, geography, and practical life concepts are introduced and encouraged through both teacher-directed and child-centered activities.

Consistent routines and expectations offer opportunities for students to practice

independence and responsibility that will build self-confidence and a life-long love of

learning.

Capital Day School offers two additional programs for the preschool child:

  • PM Preschool is offered from 12:00 – 5:00 p.m. The children have lunch, nap or rest, and are offered the opportunity to practice learned skills and concepts. During this time, students play games, work puzzles, engage in table work, play outdoors, and interact

with the teachers.  A snack is served daily.

  • Extended Day is offered from 5:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. for students who remain after regular school hours.

In 2013 the Kentucky Legislature adopted the proposal to change the “kindergarten eligibility date” from October 1 to August 1 beginning in the 2017-2018 school year. In order for children to be enrolled in public kindergarten, they will need to be 5 years old on or before August 1. Capital Day continues to use the October 1 kindergarten eligibility date.
