Capital Day School’s philosophy of educating the whole child applies to extracurricular athletics as well as school academics. Athletics provides a chance for students to experience physical and social growth and to learn to be responsible. It also allows teamwork and sportsmanship to be incorporated into the students’ learning environment. Students must pass a physical exam before participating in any athletic activity. All interested and eligible students get playing time on athletic teams.

CDS strives for the holistic academic, intellectual, physical, and emotional development of its students. Unlike other sports, both track and field provides a unique opportunity for largely individual performance challenges in a team setting.

The program at CDS is intended to challenge the student physically and mentally and to develop within the student physical and mental toughness, self-confidence, and leadership.

/  ATHLETICS

Since 1955, CDS has been committed to the development of the life time skills of critical thinking and problem solving. A wide range of enriched classroom activities complements the academic program and provides opportunities for creativity, self-expression, leadership, and collaboration. These experiences foster social skills, sportsmanship, responsibility, independence, and self-confidence. CDS promotes in each student a respect for their own unique abilities and a commitment to responsible living in an ever changing world.

03 / THE ARTS

The fourth & fifth grade students have drama elements introduced into their music classes twice a week and work on the basics of theatre as an introduction to the Middle School Drama Program.

Students in grades six, seven, and eight, have the opportunity to take an improvisation class during one nine-week period and study drama for another nine-week period each school year. During that time, the students mount a production and receive instruction in character development, movement skills, vocal skills, perception, improvisation, and expression.

MUSIC PROGRAM

The Music Program involves students from three-years-old through eighth grade. In preschool through the second grade, students sing, say, dance, and play! They use nursery rhymes, songs, basic percussion instruments, listen to music, learn about the various parts of the orchestra, begin to recognize different instrument sounds and begin notation.

In the third grade, students begin to play recorders, and in fourth grade, Orff instruments are added to the student repertoire. Students in the fifth grade continue to sing and play instruments while learning a variety of vocal warm-ups and techniques helpful for singing alone or in a group.

Middle School students in grades six, seven, and eight may choose to take music jam and/or chorus as an elective.

The Art Program is an important part of the educational experience at Capital Day School. Art is taught as a means of self-expression and communication.

Within a structured curriculum, students are exposed to the elements and principles of design in historic and contemporary art. Artists and their works are studied through slides, books, art periodicals, a variety of classroom projects, and sometimes on field trips.

04 / LANGUAGES

SPANISH

In kindergarten through seventh grade, the students are introduced to the Spanish language through song, stories, drama, and conversation, with age-appropriate written practice incorporated into lessons as the students progress in their studies.

In this way, the students develop a firm oral/aural foundation from an early age. Special attention is paid to the traditions of the Hispanic world throughout the year.
